    Presidential Speeches Bonus {Digital & PDF}

    Description

    This bundle gives a brief background to Roosevelt’s speech Declaration of War on Japan and a brief background to George W. Bush’s 911 Speech (also known as “The Declaration of George W. Bush – September 20, 2001”). Students are introduced to a few literary terms and are guided through an analysis and comparison of the characteristics of the two pieces. Finally, students develop strategies for persuasive speaking in order to articulate one excerpt from either speech. If you are teaching the bundle rather than its separate pieces only, the lessons are designed to presented in this order:

    1. Lesson 1: Analyzing Declaration of War on Japan (from Dclaration of War on Japan)
    2. Lesson 2: Analyzing Changes made to Declaration of War on Japan (from Declaration of War on Japan)
    3. Lesson 3: Analyzing Analyzing a Sound Recording of Declaration of War on Japan (from Declaration of War on Japan)

    5. Lesson 5: Analyzing 9-11 Speech (from 911 Speech)
    6. Lesson 6: Analyzing a Video Recording of 9-11 Speech (from 911 Speech)
    7. Lesson 7: Comparing and Contrasting Declaration of War on Japan to 911 Speech (from the bonus)
    8. Lesson 8: Stand Up and Deliver (from the bonus)

    This resource aligns with the Core Knowledge Sequence: 7th Grade History, page 184, Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941: “A day that will live in infamy”; 7th Grade Language Arts, Essays and Speeches, p. 179, Declaration of War on Japan by Franklin D. Roosevelt; and 8th Grade History and Geography, p. 207, The Middle East – September 11, 2001 attacks.
