Description

The 2016 Presidential election is under way! Prepare your students for Decision 2016 with this 130-page resource. This 130-page unit is designed to make the election process real and relevant to elementary aged children. Students will learn about the process of electing a president and will experience this process themselves through the election of a class mascot (a stuffed animal ordered through one of several suggested charity organizations’ websites). Government and election concepts and vocabulary will be taught, and students will learn about the presidential election process. This pro-cess will be compared to the process students will go through as they take part in their own election for Class Mascot. For older students, the Presidential election process can be emphasized, while for younger students, emphasis should be placed on the Class Mascot election process, with a simple over-view of the presidential election process given. While this unit ties in very well with the election of a U.S. President, it can be used, with minimal modification, in non-election years. The following re-sources are included in this unit:

★ Detailed Teacher's Guide: Includes student objectives, step-by-step instructions, materials and resources lists, and extension activities (20 pages)
★ Vocabulary Cards: Printable 2-page glossary and 20 full-color vocabulary posters, 1 for each unit vocabulary word (22 pages)
★ Infographics and Reading Passages: 7 full-color infographics suitable for print or display, de-tailing key unit objectives and 5 nonfiction reading passages for students; reading passages are de-signed to provide information to students to supplement textbook or other sources about key unit objec-tives (13 pages)
★ Worksheets and Reproducibles: Multiple printable student resources for each chapter, designed to be used as follow-up activies, informal assessments, and extensions of student learning (36 pages)
★ Interactive Study Guides: Study guides for each chapter are included; these can be used as chapter reviews, interactive notebook pages, or informal assessments (5 pages)
★ Critical Thinking Cards: Includes 10 open ended critical thinking cards designed to get stu-dents thinking about the election process. Each card asks students to think critically about an election-related topic, form an opinion about the topic, and justify their thinking. The cards can be used as early-finisher activities, extension and enrichment activities, writing prompts, or informal assessments. Cards are full-color and can be printed and laminated for reuse. (5 pages)
★ Mock Election Resources: Printable resources are included for conducting a mock presidential election with your class. (6 pages)
★ References: This resource also includes extensive print and web resource lists and answer keys. (10 pages)
★ As a bonus, 8 full-color printable “Did You Know?” cards, including presidential and election facts, are included. (8 pages)
★ Also included are 3 pages of general teacher information.
