What educators are saying

I enjoyed using this with my students. We used it as a game. Some of my bilingual students were partnered with a English speaking partner so they would understand the game better.

Learning Objective

Students will determine the meanings of words that contain the prefixes mis-, un-, re-, pre-, and dis-.

Description

All kids love to play Memory- here is a prefix version containing 18 matches (36 cards) with the prefixed word in the context of a sentence! This set contains mis-, pre-, re-, un-, and dis-.

I choose to begin with these five prefixes because they account for 53% of all English prefixed words, according to Word Frequency Book (Carroll, Davies, Richman, 1971).

One card has the prefix written in the context of a sentence with an accompanying picture. (Example: I will prepay for gas for my car.) The matching card has the same sentence written in its other form. (Example: I will pay before filling my car with gas.)

**Note- I always teach kids to turn one card over, and then I have them tell which card they need to make a match BEFORE they turn their second card over. This makes it a more educational activity rather than a "match the picture" activity. Print these cards out, cut, and laminate for a game that can be used year after year!

It comes in two formats: print and digital. Choose the format that is best for your students!

  1. Teachers who choose the traditional print format will print a set of cards for each small group. Students will cut apart the cards, turn them facedown, and then take turns trying to uncover matches. When all of the cards have been matched, students count their cards to determine the winner.
  2. The newer digital format is an Easel Activity. It is set up to be a game that students can play individually or with a partner. Students are presented with a sentence, and they must find the matching sentence that contains the prefixed word.
