What educators are saying

This was a great resource to differentiate. You can do it will all the same cards, or make it harder by mixing up. I did it both ways by levels. It was perfect way to practice.

Description

Teaching and reviewing morphology (prefixes, suffixes and roots) is immensely important. If you are looking for a fast paced an engaging game to review the most common prefixes, suffixes, Greek and Latin roots--this is it! When playing this game students will gain a deeper understanding of what and where affixes and roots are located. Additionally they will be exposed to the meaning of the most common prefixes, suffixes and roots.

This game is best used after morphology has been taught, but is easily adapted and differentiated.

What is included?

1. Spoons Card Game & Directions

  • Common prefix cards
  • Common suffix cards
  • Common Greek root cards
  • Common Latin root cards

2. List of common prefixes, suffixes, Greek roots and Latin roots

3. Graphic organizer to deepen understanding of prefixes, suffixes and roots

4. Word wheels (two options) to deepen understanding of prefixes, suffixes and roots.

  • put prefix, suffix or root in the center and add example words to the “spokes” on the outside of the wheel.
  • Example words can be defined or illustrated

5. Blank card templates to create your own focus for prefix, suffix and root words.

How to Play

Goal: To be the first to collect a group of four cards (example: 1 prefix, 1 found at the front of the word, discover, not, opposite of)

Differentiation Options:

  • Have students collect only three cards (ex: prefix, found at front, example word).
  • Reduce the number of card options—only use prefix card set, only use suffix card set, only use Greek root set, etc.
  • Use blank template to create your own prefix, suffix or root word focus.

Winning: The person who grabs the final spoon and has a correct matching set of cards (three or four).

  • Differentiate:
  • The final two players in the game are co-winners.
  • Or, you can assign points to the co-winners and the first to five points is the ultimate winner.

Setup:

  • For each player in the game you will need four cards from the deck (or three if you are differentiating)
  • Put spoons in the middle of the table so that every player can reach them. You will need one less spoon than the number of players in the game.

Game-play:

  • One player has the remaining deck of cards. He/she draws one card from the deck or remaining cards and determines to keep it, or pass it to the left.
    • If he/she keeps the card, he/she must discard a card from their hand to the left.
  • The opponent on the left chooses to keep the passed card, or pass the passed card to the opponent on his/her left.
    • If he/she keeps the passed card, he/she must discard a card from their hand and pass to the opponent on the left.
    • Each player can never have more than four (or three for differentiation) cards in their hand. It is against rules for a player to pick up a new card before passing one of their own.
  • Play continues at this fast pace until a player collects four cards (or three for differentiation)
  • When a player collects four cards (or three), he or she very subtly takes a spoon from the center of the table and places it in front of himself/herself.
  • The player who took the spoon will continue to pick up and pass cards, making it difficult for other players to realize what has happened.
  • When a student notices a spoon is taken, he/she may take a spoon from the center
  • The last player to grab a spoon is eliminated from the game.
  • Continue play, removing a spoon each time, until only two players are left and only one spoon. The person to get a match and grab the last spoon is the winner (read winning for alternate scoring options)
