Overview of PowerPoint:

  • Begins with attention grabber by introducing some common shapes like triangles, squares, and circles, and compares them to how we sometimes view ourselves.
  • Students learn that they will receive many messages from companies, the media, and even each other about what they should look like.
  • The lesson debunks 3 common myths about the body:
    • Myth #1- The most important thing about our bodies is what they look like.
    • Reality: Our bodies aren't meant just to be looked at. They are meant to do things!
    • Myth #2- There is one right way to look.
    • Reality: There isn't only one kind of beauty.
    • Myth #3- You will be happier if you change to look how others say to look.
    • Reality: The more you change yourself to what others say, the worse you will feel about yourself. You won't feel good if you aren't really being you.

  • Students then learn to fight the media messages with these tools:
    • #1 Make decisions based on health, not appearance.
    • #2 Focus on what your body can do, not just what it looks like.
    • #3 Stay true to your unique beauty
    • #4 Don't spread harmful messages. Our worth doesn't come from what we look like and it's never okay to make someone feel like they matter less because of their appearance.

  • It ends with an interactive review to test their knowledge.

I hope your students enjoy this lesson!

Thanks,

Eve
