Description

This lesson plan introduces your students to Contemporary Artist Rachel Ann Austin. The lesson is perfect for 1st through 5th grade with some variations. Students will have the opportunity to explore line drawing and color mixing. The lesson will invite the child to create a beautiful unique art piece based on the techniques used by Ms. Austin or create an art piece that is based on the example of art work "A Study of Poppies."

You can use this lesson in the following ways:

  • a unit on the art of Contemporary artists
  • a 30-45 minute sub plan
  • a introduction to the many ways artists create using basic line drawing techniques
  • a fantastic way to explore color theory and color mixing
  • a great opportunity to create a mothers day or grandparents day painting
  • a simple design that helps to build a student’s confidence in drawing

What teachers are saying:

-Well done! A wonderful combination of a lesson plan guiding the teacher in the classroom discussion, combined with step-by-step, clear instructions for the student painting (I would leave out the quote about what close reading is and how students have to actually see the piece of writing or art to learn; that level of detail seems better suited to a demo lesson than a TPT product). Thanks for a fantastic product!

Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.
Compose two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles, half-circles, and quarter-circles) or three-dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones, and right circular cylinders) to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape.
Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of. Describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for these examples that decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares.
Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.
