    Description

Are your students struggling with poetry or finding the deeper meaning in song lyrics? With this bundle of resources, students dive deeper in song lyrics and/or poems!

Poetic Music Analysis - Do you need a way for students to see poetry in a different light? The Poetic Music Analysis is a great way for students to become engaged and interested in poetry without realizing they are learning and diving deeper into lyrics!

Students will analyze two songs, a poem and a song, or 2 poems (depending on your preference) and your choice of songs and poems. Students look for theme, sensory relationship, rhythm, imagery, mood, and tone. Then, they will write a short analysis of what they discovered below the surface as the lyricist or poet feels and wants the reader or listener to experience from the song or poem.

Students gain a deeper understanding of how lyricists from today could relate to poets from the past and have similar life experiences despite the passing of time. They also discover that sometimes lyrics can be too repetitive and take away the meaning from the song. For instance, my students prefer the song Don't Worry, Be Happy as opposed to Happy. They often like the upbeat rhythm but prefer the lyrics to the other.

Soundtrack of My Life/Poetry Project - My students love exploring music as poetry! In this activity, students are able to share their interests and influences in their life in a fun and engaging way! This project is a great way for students to analyze the elements of music as poetry and apply their understanding through songs they love.

    Students will be asked to:

    • Create a 3 song playlist of songs that represent themselves
    • Conduct an in-depth analysis of their chosen songs
    • Complete written Liner Notes pages to emphasize and explain why they chose their songs and their relationship to them and their unique personality and life
    • Complete a Dedication Page explaining student influences in their lives
    • Create and illustrate a cover album to express their unique personality and life in relation to their musical choices

    Included:

    • General Day by Day Pacing Guide
    • Instructions and Expectations for Students
    • Album Cover Illustration Page
    • Dedication Page
    • Liner Notes Page
    • Rubric (for assessment - A checklist that students can refer to while completing the assignment and before submission provides students with guidance throughout the project.)

Poetry and Music Guided Analysis - TPCASTT Analysis - Analyzing poetry can be difficult for students and often feel daunting. Using the TPCASTT method walks students through analyzing a poem in a step-by-step process. TPCASTT guides students in their analysis of poems and even song lyrics. This specific product works with ANY poem or song lyrics!

If you are unfamiliar with the TPCASTT method, look no further! This brochure (or worksheet version) breaks the analysis down as follows:

    • Title - Make a Prediction
    • Paraphrase - Annotate, Analyze and Retell the Poem/Song in Own Words
    • Connotations - Analyze the Deeper Meaning of Poetic Devices
    • Attitude - Speaker's Tone and Word Choice
    • Shifts - Poem/Song and Speaker/Lyricist Changes
    • Title - Connections to Poem/Song and the Title
    • Theme - Speaker/Lyricist's Message of the Poem/Lyrics

    Included in this product:

    • Brochure Version of TPCASTT for a Poem
    • Worksheet Version of TPCASTT for a Poem
    • Brochure Version of TPCASTT for a Song
    • Worksheet Version of TPCASTT for a Song

**Note: There are no differences other than changing the word "poem" to "lyrics" or "song" in the two versions of the TPCASTT product. I just created a song version to introduce my students to poetry this way because the word "poetry" scares them. Using song and lyrics eases them into things!
