Poetry Smartboard Unit

This is an entire unit on Poetry (3-4 weeks)! It begins by introducing poetry and some of its features that make it unique. Then students read examples of different types of poems each day in their own poetry books (this poetry book is available for free). Some of the types of poems include: list poems, shape poems, and acrostic poems. Some of the other features discussed are: repetition, rhymes, similes, personification, and metaphors. Student write their own poems each day in their poetry books (the poetry book is available for free). At the end of the unit we choose one favorite poem to publish and make a class book of poems, complete with a contents at the beginning, listing the names of the poems and their authors. Then we invite parents in and hand the books out to them as they walk in the classroom. The parents walk around the room to find the “poets”, get their “autograph” in their book and have them read their poem. The kids love this poetry unit!
