Description

Whether you're reviewing the basics of poetry, introducing it, or diving in deeper, this resource is for you! Help your students understand how the use of rhyme scheme and figurative language creates mood and theme within poetry and songs. This resource includes guided notes, partner/group practice, and self-assessment through Maya Angelou's poem "Still I Rise." Students will practice identifying the rhyme scheme, identifying literary devices and the author's actual meaning behind it, the mood, and the theme within each poem. I also love to use this resource as a follow-up to my Speak novel unit!

This assignment should take between 2-4 class periods depending on prior knowledge and the need for scaffolding.

Songs included:

Lose Yourself by Eminem

Dial Drunk and Stick Season by Noah Kahan

Texas Hold 'Em by Beyonce

What Was I Made For? by Billie Eilish

Great Gatsby by Rod Wave
