Description

Pangea Map Puzzle Activity: Students use evidence to re-form the supercontinent Pangea! Using both fossil and geologic evidence, students will understand how Alfred Wegener supported the theory of Continental Drift. This activity does take time, but it's a great way to get your kiddos DOING! Fantastic follow up/ application question included.

This resource now contains both PRINT and DIGITAL COPIES of this activity. A link has been added for the digital version. If you already purchased this, you will need to re-download to access the link.

This resource contains a puzzle of the 7 continents, each with geologic and/or fossil evidence of Pangea. Students will color code the key, cut out continents, and then re-form Pangea using the fossil and geologic evidence. Student questions and answer key provided.

*Note: Each continent is on a separate sheet of paper. To conserve paper and in the interest of time, it is best to have students work in groups of 2 or 3 for the puzzle.*

Analyze and interpret data on the distribution of fossils and rocks, continental shapes, and seafloor structures to provide evidence of the past plate motions. Examples of data include similarities of rock and fossil types on different continents, the shapes of the continents (including continental shelves), and the locations of ocean structures (such as ridges, fracture zones, and trenches). Paleomagnetic anomalies in oceanic and continental crust are not assessed.
