Description

Do you want a fun but practical Martin Luther King Day activity for your Language Arts classroom, Social Studies class, or advanced ESL class?? Do you want to teach your students about MLK's legacy but you want a hihg engagement lesson? Then look no further!

This MLK-themed pixel art resource is a fun and NO PREP way to have students learn about segregation, Jim Crow, peacful protest, and MLK's lasting legacy. The resource comes with a text passage AND the pixel art activity.

First, students read the text passage either independently or with a partner. Then, to check their understanding, they complete the pixel art activity which asks them questions from the reading.

As students read each question or prompt in the Google Sheet Pixel Art, they write in the answer box. If they are correct, the box will turn a color and a certain number of pixels appear in the mystery picture.

This resource covers the following topics:

  • Martin Luther King background
  • Jim Crow laws
  • segregation
  • peaceful protest
  • Pettus Bridge march and March on Washington
  • non-violence and the influence of Mohandas Gandhi
  • MLK day and legacy

*Students must correctly spell out the answer words. An answer key is included for you, the teacher.

You will assign this activity as you normally would for a digital resource using Google Classroom, Canvas, or whatever LMS you use. Students each need their own copy to sumit to you.

This resource works excellently as a sub plan or an independent activity because it is self checking! It is great for the Language Arts classroom, History class, or Advanced ESL class. It is desiged from grades 6-12.

This activity aligns to the following state standards:

WIDA ELD Standard 2: Language of Language Arts

WIDA ELD Standard 5: Language of Social Studies

Common Core ELA standards (I tagged them for 6th grade, but they apply to a range of grades).
