Chemical & Physical Changes Printable Reading Packet

    Description

Teach a unit on chemical and physical changes using these print, digital, and hands-on lessons and activities. Students will learn about characteristics and examples of a physical and chemical change by reading the printable worksheets or digital Google Slide activity. Hands-on and digital activities are included to allow students to use evidence to identify physical or chemical changes of matter in the real world. Review materials will solidify student learning, and a project and test will allow you to gauge student understanding of how matter changes.

    Students will:

    • Explain what a physical change is
    • Identify examples of a physical change
    • Explain what a chemical change is
    • Identify examples of a chemical change
    • Support their claim with evidence
    • Learn why, when, and how chemical changes happen in the world around us
    • Understand how matter changes state
    • Learn how our bodies need both changes for digestion to occur

This physical and chemical changes unit includes:

    • Unit Breakdown: Detailed explanation of how I teach this unit to my students. Choose to follow my guidelines or adapt to fit your unique classroom needs.
    • Choice homework assignment: Assess student knowledge by assigning this to be completed by the end of the unit or for fast finishers. It includes 9 activities for students to complete to further their understanding of changes in matter.
    • Bulletin board posters detail changes in matter definitions. Each poster includes illustrations and provide real-world examples.
    • Printable chemical and physical changes worksheets to introduce, define, talk about real-life situations, and practice identifying the changes. Students will answer guided reading questions to assess understanding.
    • Digital Google Slide version of printable packet
    • 8 Hands on Lab Activities:
      • removing egg yolk from its shell
      • observing ice cubes and identifying the change
      • thinking about the human body's digestive system and the changes that take place there
      • decomposition of bananas
      • four additional activities to demonstrate knowledge of chemical changes in matter (Worksheets incorporate ELA skills by asking students to make a claim and support it with evidence from the experiment)

How to Use This Unit in Your Classroom:

Bulletin Board Posters: Hang these posters around the room at the beginning of the unit to immerse your students in the vocabulary surrounding physical and chemical changes. Students will then be able to refer to the changes in matter posters throughout the unit for the definition and examples.

Science worksheets: The chemical and physical changes worksheets will anchor students' understanding and knowledge of how matter changes. Students will learn the definitions of physical change and chemical change, how to identify each change in matter and examples. Choose to read this as a whole class assignment, assign students in small groups to work together, or try a flipped approach and assign it as homework.

Hands-on Activities: There is no better way to solidify learning than to let students work with their hands. The 8 demos or lab activities will let students observe and create physical and chemical changes. All use easy-to-find items and will motivate and engage your students.

Note activity: Use the graphic organizers to summarize learning. Once students are completed with the organizers, they can use them as reference pages for the remainder of the unit.

Review activities: There are many review activities included. Choose to use all or some of them to help students understand the differences between chemical and physical change. Most have print and digital options.

Project or test: Assess student knowledge of physical and chemical changes using the project or test. The project allows for differentiation by using the task cards to assign students a change in matter or demonstrate their own to the classroom. The test has a print and digital option. The digital option allows you to edit to meet the needs of your classroom.
