What educators are saying

My students really enjoyed applying their knowledge of syllabication rules by playing this game. An extra bonus was that they started thinking of definitions for the nonsense words.
I used this in my classroom and in tutoring to help students practice sounding out new words using skills they have learned. They have a lot of fun!

Description

As a Reading Specialist, I work with students who struggle with decoding and syllabication or breaking words into manageable chunks. Practicing nonsense words is a proven strategy for improving this skill. Poor decoders can be second-language learners: ELL or ELD, know less vocabulary, get lost within words, use onset only and guess at the rest of the word, or simply timid readers.

While playing this game children play independently and don’t worry about getting the word correct, they just want to play. Soon, they are willing to take a risk and try these nonsense words. As confidence improves, students don’t hesitate as much or guess during normal reading.

With the fast pace game of gaining, losing, and trading cards, your students/children with never realize they are practicing breaking up words.
