What educators are saying

Great resource to use alongside the companion book. Students love rhyming and the visuals made it even more fun. Thank you!
I used this for a summer reading camp. The students were engaged and enjoyed the story as well as the activities that went along with it.

Description

#basketbargains
This fun & educational two week unit is perfect for the beginning of the year when your emerging young readers are learning to recognize rhyming patterns in language, a foundational pre-reading phonemic awareness skill. Research shows that learning to recognize and produce rhyming patterns helps students develop decoding skills. This language based unit is aligned to the book, The Hungry Thing. (Having the book is not necessary for this unit--see note below.) These phonemic awareness lessons also work well with ESL and speech students working on phonemic awareness and auditory/oral manipulation skills. These lessons are appropriate for Tier 1, 2 or 3 instruction/intervention.

Although the book is out of print, there are limited used editions available. However, showing your students the read-aloud on YouTube HERE is just as entertaining as reading the book and all the background knowledge they need to complete the fun, silly, yet educational lessons in this unit.

This little unit is chuck full of foundational reading goodness:
*Summary of the The Hungry Thing Book (for the teacher)
*Teaching Points for The Hungry Thing Book (for the teacher)
*Hungry Thing Poster Makings (18x24 when constructed)
*Food Cards (to feed The Hungry Thing)
*Hungry Thing on a Stick Homework & Parent Letter
*Onset & Rime Food Word Cards for Rhyming Center
*Group Reading Activity - Observing & Describing The Hungry Thing
*Hungry Thing Bingo (with 6 different mats & teacher callout sheets)
*Collaborative Class Book
*Creative Writing Activity
*Interactive Writing/Labeling Activity
*Class Big Book
*My Little Reader Writer "in my own words"
*The Great Plate Battle Narrative Writing Prompt
*Hungry Thing Phonics Worksheets
*Hungry Thing Phonemic Awareness Activities (covering 15 skills identified below, and all determined to be essential by the International Reading Association for emerging readers)

Whether you are a general education teacher, special education teacher, speech pathologist, ESL teacher, homeschooler, or substitute teacher, your little ones are sure to enjoy the silly eating habits of The Hungry Thing! These lessons are so pleasing and fun for students, they will ask to repeat lessons again and again...they will surely become class favorites. I hope your students enjoy them as much as mine do!

Be sure to take a look at the preview for details of most of the learning activities and lessons included in this sweet little phonemic awareness and phonics unit.

Thank you for looking, purchasing, or adding to your wishlist!
