Phoneme Checklists & Flashcards for Intervention, Title Reading, and Fluency

Here is a no frills set of phonemes and blends that I think you will love. As a reading intervention teacher, I use these flashcards and checklists EVERY day and with all the students. If they are good readers, then I use the advanced sets for continued progress. For those who struggle with reading, I start with the first set and work my way through. I made copies for all the teachers' aids as well.

Why teach phonemic awareness?

Through modeling and practice, students can learn how to identify individual phonemes within a word to aid in decoding new words. This will increase a student’s reading fluency with increased reading comprehension as the ultimate goal. This is especially helpful for students with reading difficulties as they need direct and systematic instruction in phonics.

Suggestions for using this activity (grades K-12):
- Use these with both typically developing students and those who struggle with reading.
- Begin with the Set 1 flash cards. First, model the sound using the saying on the back (ex., /ă/ as in apple). The student repeats what is said. Then, gradually add (fold in) new phonemes to the ones the student has learned.
- Work with each student daily and assess weekly or bi-weekly depending on their progress.
- Teachers working with multiple grade levels can use the full check list throughout the year or over multiple years.
-Teachers of individual grade levels may wish to use just one or two of the individual sets.
- With the sayings provided on the back of each flashcard, a teacher’s aid can practice with the student.
- Use an individual phoneme flash card to build words by adding regular letter flashcards to the front, back, or both.
