Description

I am so excited to finally bring this to you! My favorite unit I've probably ever taught and hands down the most successful unit I've done while teaching heritage speakers.

This is an 16 day stand alone unit (that could be extended by 2 days if you have access to the Movie Freedom Writers which I suggest showing at the end) for high school heritage classes. It includes all the mentor texts and hand outs you'll need. There are brief coaching videos for each lesson (this is intended to make your planning a breeze), as well as a set of slides with visuals for each session that you can use as a base for sharing with absent students. It also includes coaching videos on how to do conferencing through the unit, how to grade the test and use the rubric, etc. It meets Common Core Standards in writing for 9th grade and above.

This unit could definitely be used in MS with some modifications in the mentor texts (I am working on that update and will share when it's ready).
