This is a complete unit on the graphic novel Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi.

When I taught this in my class, we had frequent discussions about the role of women in the world, issues in the Middle East, and empowerment. This powerful novel will definitely change the way your students see the world.
The unit focuses on research, discussion, and poetry in addition to the graphic novel. It culminates with an authentic assessment aimed at supporting and evaluating students' understanding of the author's purpose.
The Common Core State standards covered in this unit are:
Stage One:
W.9-10.7 : Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question) or solve a problem; narrow or broaden the inquiry when appropriate; synthesize multiple sources on the subject, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.
Stage Two:
RL.9-10.6: Analyze a particular point of view or cultural experience reflected in a work of literature from outside the United States, drawing on a wide reading of world literature.
RL.9-10.1: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
Stage Three:
W.9-10.1 : Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.
