Description

This novel study is based on the Rick Riordan book, "The Lightning Thief".The novel study is organised into the 22 chapters of the book. Each chapter has 6 questions (132 questions in total!!), all of which elicit higher order thinking (no lower-order questions such as what, who, where etc are included). There are also 10 final activities at the end of the novel study, which include a range of activities to suit all learning styles and preferences. They could also be used as independent projects. The novel study was developed by me for use with some very highly gifted Grade 2 students but would also be useful for both mainstream and gifted/talented classes from Grades 3-6. It could be used for a whole class, small group or individual students.

The questions are informally based on Bloom's Taxonomy and The Williams Model. They also meld nicely with many strategies from C.A.R.S, First Steps and The Maker Model.

There is a strong focus on comparing and contrasting, building vocabulary, understanding figurative language (alliteration, similes, metaphors & personification), connecting to a text & characters, analysing, evaluating, synthesising, creating, understanding inferential information, grammar (verbs, adverbs, nouns, adjectives), and understanding author's purpose (word choice and author techniques such as humour, dialogue, etc.).

I do not include spaces for answers, as this allows you to differentiate... you might expect a 1 sentence answer from your lowest group of students, and a whole essay on the same question from your top group of students, including evidence/quotes from the text. It gives you the flexibility to use the questions how you choose. In fact, it also allows you to designate (or let the students choose) which questions are answered by which students.

NOTE: I have a wide range of HIGHER ORDER THINKING novel studies for sale- check out all my titles at my store! They are my best-sellers, as I believe they genuinely fill a need in the market- I actually began making them because I couldn't find anything like them already on the market. I got sick of having to use literature studies that involved really basic types of questioning, and just didn't challenge or extend students' thinking and understanding at all. These novel studies take me a lot of time and careful thought to create- you are truly getting a lot of value for money! I hope you find them as helpful and enjoyable to use as my previous customers have!
