Description

• Students will be able to identify high-risk behaviors and the consequences for common high-risk behaviors in adolescence.
• Students will be able to model refusal skills.
• Students will be able to model respectful persuasion skills.

Say: “Today we are going to practice skills for refusing high-risk behaviors and for persuading others not to engage in high-risk behaviors.”
• Lead a discussion on peer pressure.
 Say: “We have all experienced peer pressure. What are some examples of negative peer pressure students your age experience? Is peer pressure ever positive? What are some examples of positive peer pressure?”
 Explain that peer pressure can happen at any age, although it is more pronounced in the teen years.
 Say: “Why do you think peer pressure is more common among teens than among adults?” (ANSWER: Young people tend to enlist the involvement of their peers in order to overcome their own fears and inhibitions regarding new or risky behaviors. Older people are less prone to experimentation due to previous experiences and greater development of the frontal lobe.)
 Say: “Think about a time when experienced peer pressure. What were you pressured into doing? How did it make you feel? Were you able/unable to resist the peer pressure? How?”
