Description
Guide students through close readings of two poems: "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost and "Harlem (Dream Deferred)" by Langston Hughes. Then, facilitate their understanding of the central themes and speakers’ attitudes as they construct connections between the poems. Use this activity to provide practice with a prose constructed response (short essay).
This 20-page product includes the following:
- explicit lesson plan with identified Common Core ELA Anchor Standards
- anticipation guide
- building background handout
- sample annotation passage
- poem texts
- rereading strategy handout
- literature web and poetry graphic organizer
- Venn diagram
- literary analysis prompt
- short literary analysis essay rubric
- key (with detailed responses for all activities and a sample essay)
Incorporating all strands of the Common Core English Language Arts (ELA) Anchor Standards, this "paired passages" lesson encourages students to practice skills in annotation, poetry analysis, and synthesis. Students complete handouts with before-, during-, and post-reading strategies, which provide scaffolding for diverse learners. After reading, students write an essay that imitates the style of a standardized assessment. Even if your students will not face such assessments, you'll find this lesson provides valuable instruction for classes needing to practice literary analysis writing.
With its detailed instructions and samples, this resource would make an excellent lesson for a substitute if you will be out for a couple of days.
