Description

These outdoor sports themed sentence and paragraph scrambles are great for providing both differentiation and rigor for your guided reading groups & literacy centers. There are eight different sentence scrambles and five different paragraph scrambles, and all scrambles have two different options for differentiation (see description below). The paragraph scrambles are a mix of narrative and expository or informational texts. Indoor sports featured in this resource: lacrosse, field hockey, badminton, golf, tennis.

Why are scrambles such valuable teaching tools?

• Sentence scrambles allow students to work on sight word recognition and practice building sentences with proper sentence structure, even if they are currently unable to independently write in complete sentences.

• Paragraph scrambles are great for working on fluency at the sentence level, teaching kids to look for (and later use) linking terms such as first/then/next/last, and teaching students to recognize and re-create a logical order of events in a paragraph.

I've included both sentence and paragraph scrambles in this resource to address the wide range of ability levels that are often present in primary and special education classrooms. To help you further differentiate these activities to fit your students' needs, this resource has the following differentiation options:

Regular Option: The word cards for the sentence scrambles and the sentence strips for the paragraph scrambles have the same picture printed on each card/strip. Independent readers should be able to re-create the correct sentence or paragraph sequence by arranging the word cards or sentence strips in the correct order.

Differentiated Option: Each sentence and paragraph scramble consists of one picture that is cut up into individual words cards or sentence strips, like a puzzle. Students who are not ready to independently sequence sentences or paragraphs can still complete the activity by using the puzzle cues. To see what these differentiation options look like, be sure to download the preview!
