Interactive Notebook Materials
Use the notes to help your students remember the steps to solving order of operations problems. In this resource, use the mnemonic GEMA instead of PEMDAS. See the last page of the preview to learn more about why using GEMA is a great idea for your students. The notes have pieces for your students to cut out and paste inside to help guide their notes, as well as four example problems that show a variety of ways the order of operations appears in expressions.
Order of Operations Work Mat
The Order of Operations Work Mat is two-sided, one for typical problems and the other to facilitate student understanding of how to solve expressions written as fractions.
Order of Operations Task Card Set 1
This set of task cards uses only whole numbers without exponents. This set has carefully selected numbers to facilitate the basics of teaching order of operations. Although grouping symbols are not used, the numbers are selected to allow you to insert parentheses in almost any location. This allows students to see how grouping symbols change the way an expression is simplifies
Order of Operations Task Card Set 2
This set of task cards uses whole numbers, no exponents, and up to two levels of grouping. This set matches 5th grade order of operations standards perfectly!
