    Description

    This bundle includes six close readings, one per chapter, focus on key scenes from Of Mice and Men, and could be assigned for homework or used as in-class activities. Each close reading includes a passage from the text and directions for annotation of the text as well as three after reading activities: creation of a graphic organizer, a text-based response, and a text-based drawing. Students will also analyze characters, theme, and conflict and respond creatively to the text using art and writing.

    Reinforce literary terms through writing with a set of 12 constructed responses, 2 per chapter, which cover the following literary terms: character, mood, dialogue, theme, symbolism, conflict, word choice, plot structure, setting and point of view. A blank constructed response form allows you to create additional prompts as needed and a constructed response analysis forms allows students to looks for patterns in their own writing.

    The included grammar and text analysis activities can be used as warmups/bellringers or as task cards. Students will make corrections to lines from the text including usage of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. Students will then analyze those lines for tone, mood, characterization, conflict, foreshadowing, imagery, or significance to the text.

    Forty figurative language task cards contain examples from Of Mice and Men, including similes, metaphors, personification, hyperbole, and idioms. Students will identify the type(s) of figurative language on each card and then analyze its meaning.

    Twenty eight journal prompts can be used as daily warmups/bellringers or as a task cards activity. Students will reflect on issues from the text and make connections with their own lives.

    The vocabulary magic squares can be assigned for homework or used as an in-class activity. Students will need to look up terms to match them with the correct definitions. Students will know that they have correctly matched the terms and definitions when each row and column in their “magic square” adds up to the same “magic number.”

    The pre-reading activity with help students to understand the struggles of a migrant worker during the Great Depression and begin to imagine what life was like for George and Lennie in Of Mice and Men. Students will rank items to carry with them and consider the qualities of a good travel companion.
