Looking for a fun and engaging way to teach obligations and responsibilities of citizenship? Look no further! My stations activity will have students engaged and leave your class with a knowledge of the importance of fulfilling citizen obligations and responsibilities in a student-centered activity!


With this lesson, students will visit nine stations relating to different obligations and responsibilities. The nine stations include:

  • Voting
  • Obeying laws
  • Serving on a Jury
  • Contributing to the Common Good
  • Petitioning the Government
  • Paying Taxes
  • Attend Civic Meetings
  • Joining the Selective Service System
  • Running for Office


At each station, students will determine whether each part of citizenship is an obligation or responsibility using their printable packets. Then, students will answer questions such as why they are important, what they are, what the consequences of not doing them are, how they are essential to a Constitutional Republic, and what a society without these ideas would look like. In addition to obligations and responsibilities, there is also information included on Constitutional Republics, the Rule of Law, qualifications for public office, and much more! Students will use that information for a summative assessment at the end in the form of a one-paragraph essay.

Connecticut CIV 6-7.1 Explain specific roles played by citizens (such as voters, jurors, taxpayers, members of the armed forces, petitioners, protesters, and officeholders).

Delaware C.3.6-8b Students will understand that American citizenship includes responsibilities such as voting, jury duty, obeying the law, service in the armed forces when required, and public service.

Georgia SSCG16.b Describe how citizens voluntarily and responsibly participate in the political process by voting, performing public service, being informed about current issues, and respecting differing opinions.
