Description

Target the second tier of the language processing hierarchy with your older students using this object function unit!

The ability to identify and name the function of objects is an important skill as students build their knowledge of semantics and word relationships, forming building blocks for categorizing and classifying, as well as recognizing similarities and differences.

This unit was designed with older students in mind, using black & white text as stimuli without visual aids. A variety of activities are available, including sorting cards, worksheets, and task cards. Activities require both closed-ended answer and open-ended answers to target both expressive and receptive knowledge of object functions.

Included:

1 - Sort a variety of noun words by their function

2 - Identify the function and category of common noun words (differentiation of function vs. category)

3 - Worksheets (5 of each)

-> Complete a sentence by choosing the correct noun from an answer bank when given the object's function

-> Identify if a statement regarding an object's function is true or false

-> Complete a sentence by generating the function of an object

-> Compare and contrast 2 objects with the same function

4 - Story Activity

-> Find the wrong words within a story

-> Given a sentence from the story, choose the function that should have been used to determine the right word to be used

5 - Group Work

-> Choose an object word as a class. Each student writes a statement about its function. Discuss as a class.

-> Choose an object word as a class. Each student draws a picture depicting its function. Discuss as a class.

6 - Task Cards

-> Name objects with a certain function, state the function of an object, and determine if a function is true or false.
