Nutrition Labels: Common Sports Energy/Protein Bars
- Google Slides™
Description
This resource was created to teach students how to read nutrition labels and understand what they are consuming. I begin this lesson by displaying the the food label slide and discussing each of its components. I point out common misconceptions related to calories and servings size per container. As well as, talk about daily protein recommendation rates and things to watch out for like added sugars. Then I have them research the nutrition labels for each of the bars listed in the chart and fill-in the missing data. That last column of the charts challenges students to look at the ingredients of the bars and decide if they believe the bar is truly a protein or energy bar. I encourage my students to compare the grams of sugar and protein to determine which is higher. The last space allows students to research a bar they may commonly consume or one they are interested in.
