    Description

Looking for a new way to build 1st grade number sense? Want to bring visual representation to various 1st grade algebraic thinking concepts? Balance scale prompts are math problems that use the image of a scale to provide a model of what is happening within the prompt.

Students will make connections and find relationships between the numbers on either side of the scale to find solutions.

    *****SAVE BIG WITH THE BUNDLE!!!!!!********

Balance scale prompts are an ideal resource for building the concept of mathematical equivalence. Students must understand that the equal sign represents “sameness” on either side of an equation in order to be successful when they advance to algebraic thinking.

Balance scale problems promote critical thinking as students navigate problems that are represented by a balanced scale and questions with unbalanced scales (greater than, less than) which build a foundation for conceptually understanding inequalities.

What is included in this bundle? This resource contains 20 prompts per set (there are 10 sets per grade) covering a variety of different math skills. NO PREP is required, just display and go! Answer keys are provided.

3 reasons to love math balance scales:

    1. Promote conceptual understanding-- Boost students’ ability to better understand math equivalency
    2. Foster algebraic thinking-- Scales provide a visual way for students to master algebraic concepts
    3. Boost math flexibility-- Students see inequalities and find multiple ways to balance the scales

You can use Balance Scale Prompts in different ways… such as.....

    • as part of your whole group instruction
    • number sense routine
    • during small group instruction which align to your curriculum
    • partner work
    • independent practice
    • morning work/ bell ringer
    • problem of the day
    • tutoring
    • remediation/intervention
