Description

This assignment contains 4 separate primary sources examining non-violent protest strategies, and the early civil rights movement.

The sources include;

(1.) Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee statement of purpose

1960

(2.) Martin Luther King Jr. letter from a Birmingham Jail

1963

(3.) President John F. Kennedy in a radio and television report to the American people. 1963

(4.) Estimated Percentage of Voting-Age African Americans Registered in 1960 and 1968. 1960 and 1968

Each document has 1-4 questions each to help students analyze the sources and understand the time period. (Total Questions 14.)

Finally one short writing prompt exists at the end of the activity: Apply information from the four documents provided to develop a theory on the effectiveness of nonviolent protest. Cite information from the documents provided when appropriate and necessary.
