Description

Complete with the option for Google Slides™ and pdf format. This product includes 110+ cards to use as resources for studying the graphic novel, New Kid by Jerry Craft. The resource is great for comprehension guidance, classroom discussion, literature circles, book clubs, novel studies, task cards, book challenges, reflection journals, and/or student writing prompts. This book is a timely work of fiction that is thought-provoking, humorous, serious, hopeful, assuring, and committed to engaging students in important discussions on significant themes. It received the 2020 Newbery and Coretta Scott King awards. The book has special appeal for middle-grade readers and the storyline and graphic format can inspire reluctant readers to engage with books while increasing important visual literacy skills and literary skills for all types of readers. I highly recommend it!

  • This novel is appropriate for middle school and junior high boys and girls. It is recommended for grades four and up and children nine years and older. Most middle school students will identify with at least one, if not several of the characters in the story, and its realistic themes will inspire thought and discussion. The book endorses positive themes such as friendship, acceptance, family, perseverance, overcoming adversity and prejudice, and the importance of community.

  • This book is an especially useful vehicle for addressing a wide range of TEKS and Common Core standards and the questions provided allow differentiation and adaptation of how the book is used to address these standards in discussion, presentation, and composition.

  • The questions are labeled by chapter for chapter-specific questions.

  • General questions exploring themes, structure, mood, literary elements, visual literacy, and the author's craft are included without reference to specific chapters.

  • This book is a great vehicle for teaching and improving visual literacy among students and exploring graphic novel formats. This format can engage readers who are reluctant and struggle with traditional novel formats while promoting the same critical reading skills promoted in quality books with traditional formats.

  • An answer key is included in the pdf for chapter-specific questions. Many of the questions are open to interpretation. They are purposefully designed for discussion and reflection. The questions prompt students to think critically about the story, share observations, express their understanding, and make connections and applications while exploring literary elements.
