What educators are saying

I love how this package was laid out. Very engaging. I appreciate all of the hard work that went into this resource.
My students loved how fast paced the units become. They leave more space for me to do more experiments and design projects. Parents have also said they liked having a set of notes available they could reference when helping their students.

Description

This science resource follows Ontario's global and specific expectations of Ontario's grade 8 science curriculum. Students will learn about water systems by learning about various forms of water, analyzing climate and natural water systems, and researching information about our water supply, demand, quality, and sustainability, among other expectations. In addition, this workbook unit explores water bodies through inquiry-based learning. Students will research and explain the natural side effects of manufactured oil spills and water cleaning methods.

HOW IS THIS RESOURCE DIFFERENT?

I'll get straight to the point. Many students don't enjoy reading textbooks because the content is often very dry and bland. Most books get straight to the point and lose student interest. Upon purchasing this teaching resource, you'll notice that this packet is written differently. It's informal, includes a few cringe jokes, and tries to teach students on a personal level. Moreover, it entices them to try to perform their own inquiry-based independent science experiments at home. I wanted to write it as if I were conversing with your students. It's a short unit(compared to textbook units), but it is filled with embedded links, QR codes, and a PowerPoint presentation. It has everything you need to cover the specific and global expectations of the Ontario science curriculum.

ONTARIO CURRICULUM

Welcome to the Grade 8 Water Systems Student Workbook! This comprehensive resource was designed to help students meet the expectations outlined in the 2022 curriculum, including the ability to assess the social and environmental impact of freshwater scarcity and propose a plan of action to address sustainability issues.

CLIMATE AND CULTURE

In this workbook, students will also demonstrate an understanding of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit knowledge and values about water and the importance of watersheds and the impact of human activity and natural phenomena on the water table. They will learn about the various states of water on Earth's surface and how climate change and other factors have contributed to melting glaciers and polar ice caps.

WHAT TYPE OF HELP IS OFFERED TO STUDENTS?

In addition to covering key concepts, this workbook includes various interactive activities and resources to help students learn and retain critical information. These include vocabulary sheets, printable student journals, reading and worksheets, answer keys, study questions, Google Forms quizzes, embedded links, and QR codes to YouTube videos. The workbook also includes a unit test and an updated 2022 Science curriculum activity at the end of the resource.

It promotes inquiry-based learning and encourages students to think critically about the water crisis and how to address it.

The workbook is divided into six chapters:

Chapter 1: Water in Different Forms

Chapter 2: Climate and Water

Chapter 3: Ice Ice Baby and Water Systems

Chapter 4: Our Supply of Water - Natural and Human Factors

Chapter 5: Water Quality; and Chapter 6: Water Consumption and Sustainability

Each chapter covers important information and concepts related to water systems and is designed to help students develop a deep understanding of this complex and essential topic.

LOW-PREP

I would consider this resource "low-prep" as there is nothing required of you but to print it. However, there may be some science experiments that require some setup. I've included some chapter quizzes/assignments in PDF and Google Forms. Use these tasks as consolidation assignments or discussion topics in your classroom! The content of this packet is relevant and accurate. It will not impede their understanding!

✬July 2022: Good news! I just became a certified easel creator! I decided to start putting them in some of my resources. This resource currently has the following:

- Chapter 1 Easel assessment

- Chapter 2 Easel assessment

- Chapter 3 Easel assessment

- Chapter 4 Easel assessment

- Chapter 5 Easel assessment

Easel allows teachers to modify purchased resources, including movable pieces, apply pen activities, highlight, link sharing, and add/remove questions. Easel's goal is to foster differentiation in the classroom.

CHAPTER DESCRIPTIONS

They will explore the relative amounts and distribution of these states on Earth's surface and the conditions under which they exist. Students will also learn about the water cycle and how water moves through the environment.

Chapter 2: Climate and Water In this chapter, students will learn about the role of water in the Earth's climate system, including how bodies of water can affect atmospheric conditions. They will also explore how climate change affects water systems worldwide, including melting glaciers and polar ice caps.

Chapter 3: Ice Ice Baby and Water Systems In this chapter, students will learn about the role of ice in water systems, including the importance of polar ice caps and glaciers. They will explore the factors that contribute to the melting of these ice formations, including climate change, and the impact of this melting on local and global water systems.

Chapter 4: Our Supply of Water - Natural and Human Factors In this chapter, students will learn about the various sources of fresh water, including rivers, lakes, and groundwater. They will explore how human activity and natural phenomena can affect the availability and quality of these water sources and the importance of water management and planning.

Chapter 5: Water Quality In this chapter, students will learn about the various indicators of water quality, including pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen. They will explore the impact of human activity on water quality, including pollution and overconsumption, and how water quality is monitored and managed.

Chapter 6: Water Consumption and Sustainability In this final chapter, students will learn about the importance of water sustainability and how municipalities process and manage water usage.
