What educators are saying

I had done an activity similar to this before with my classes but loved the idea of using candy! The analysis questions and CER were great to help students make sense of the data.
My ESL class of adult learners loved this activity as an opener prior to the essay on Super Bugs. Thank you!

Description

This activity is a great way to model natural selection and discuss the public health problem of antibiotic resistance. I have used this in biology and anatomy and physiology. I have included two different options for post-lab analysis depending on the class this is getting used for.

Construct an explanation based on evidence for how natural selection leads to adaptation of populations. Emphasis is on using data to provide evidence for how specific biotic and abiotic differences in ecosystems (such as ranges of seasonal temperature, long-term climate change, acidity, light, geographic barriers, or evolution of other organisms) contribute to a change in gene frequency over time, leading to adaptation of populations.
