Engage your students with this fun and comprehensive, 30 page resource to help your students produce a research report on Native Americans. This report resource contains worksheets, organizers, tools and forms to use for your students to create, develop, write, edit, illustrate, present, and assess your students’ research report.
This report (or performance task) is also designed to not only to learn and explain the new information, but answer some higher level thinking questions (Common Core Essential Questions) to apply the knowledge they have learned.
This report packaged is designed to have your students choose one Native American Tribe, to research it, and complete this report.
A simple rubric and student checklist is included. You can also add to this report by asking your students to do a project or PowerPoint presentation as well.
You can use this report template in its entirety, or “pick and choose” the questions that you wish to use and tailor it to your students’ needs. This package contains the following report elements:
1. Title Page- Templates Provided-Tribe Name, student’s name, and teacher’s name) We created grayscale version if you can’t copy in color.
2. Which Native American group did you choose and why did you choose it?
3. What region in the United States did your Native Americans primarily live? Describe this region, its resources, its weather, and its landforms.
4. Describe the type of homes that the group that you studied made and why did they make this type of dwelling?
5. Describe the typical diet of your Native American group and why did they eat these particular foods.
6. Many Native American groups had very special ceremonies where they performed various songs, dances, rituals, and food preparation. Describe these ceremonies and why they had them.
7. How did your Native Americans travel? Where did they travel, how far from their homes did they travel, and why did they feel the need to travel?
8. What types of animals did your Native American group rely on and why was this animal or these animals important to them?
9. What kinds of tools did your Native Americans use? What did they use these tools for?
10. Nature was quite important to most Native American groups. How did your Native Americans view nature?
11. Describe the type of art that your Native Americans created. Art can be creations such as pottery, sculpture, any type of pictures or paintings, leatherwork, clothing, basket weaving, dolls, or other collectible items.
12. How did your Native Americans treat unfamiliar people or groups of people that they did not know? Did they trade with others? Describe these interactions.
13. What are the interesting facts about your Native American group? Were there special leaders, inventions, or discoveries associated with your Native American group?
14. Compare and contrast your Native American group with another group of Native Americans that you find interesting. What are their similarities and differences?
15. If you were a member of your Native American group long ago, what would a typical day be like for you? Describe your day as a member of this group.
16. What caused your Native American group to fall ( if applicable). Was it because of wars with others moving into their region, diseases or illnesses? Describe whether this group of people is still in existence today, or if not, why not?
17. Blank page to copy to use for topics that need more space to write. Copy and insert into the student’s report as needed.
18. An “Additional Information” page to add other interesting facts or other information not previously covered or that doesn’t fit anywhere else.
19. Illustrate your Native American group in the natural surroundings in which they resided.
20. Illustrate an important member of the group that you studied. It could be a leader, important person, an older person, or a child.
21. A “Circle Map” has been included for your students to write down some basic, preliminary information about the Native American group they chose. Circle Maps (Graphic Organizers) are used to gather preliminary information about your topic. The name of the Native American goes inside the smaller circle and the new facts go outside the smaller circle.
