What educators are saying

I used this in 5th grade with my Birchbark House unit. It was the perfect addition of poetry since the unit doesn't include any.

Description

Native Americans have an incredibly rich oral history, but just over one hundred years ago, this collection of 21 authentic Native American poems of the Sioux and Chippewa/Ojibwe American Indians was published in book form.

I haven't changed any of the original 1917 text in order to preserve it as a culturally and historically important primary source document. However, I have simplified the font and adapted the Native American poems to 8 1/2" by 11" paper size for ease of use in 21st century classrooms. Additionally, I've added historic photographs for enrichment as well as picture support for students. Please be sure to check out the preview above for a sampling of how each Native American poem is formatted.

This primary source collection of Native American poems covers many topics:

  • religious ceremonies
  • dreams of the medicine man
  • warrior battles
  • the importance of the buffalo & horse
  • courtship
  • marriage
  • papooses in cradleboards.

Reading Native American Indian poems of the Sioux and Chippewa, is an excellent way to celebrate Native American Heritage Month in November!

Enjoy learning about Native Americans with historic poems of the Sioux and Chippewa!
