Description

This cross-curricular project Native American Navigation is a multi-week unit designed to be collaborative by connecting music to culture & history, and to require critical thinking skills. While many tribes and nations had signed, spoken, & drawn languages, music was an integral component for communication & celebration. To honor that, students will use music as their communication tool during this project.

Students will:

  1. Compose 4 short rhythms for the cardinal directions (N, S, E, & W)
  2. Draw a map of their school to include a "home" and an important ritual spot.
  3. Transform that architectural layout into the geography the people of a specific tribe or nation would have encountered
  4. Navigate another student from place to place by communicating through drummed rhythms.
