⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "This is the best narrative writing resource I've come across. It scaffolded their writing throughout our unit and had so many first grade friendly topics to write about."

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "I love all of the writing resources that Keeping My Kinders Busy creates. My only regret is that I bought them one at a time instead of purchasing the bundle."

K-1 WRITING UNIT 3: PERSONAL NARRATIVE

This unit begins by teaching students how to combine words to make a sentence, and we practice writing about what we like, what we do and how we feel.

Student learn how to write a topic sentence and use sequencing words to add details to their narrative piece.

Sentence starters, picture word banks, writing prompts and graphic organizers provide students with the scaffolding they need to be confident and successful writing an entire personal narrative.

The writing process does not have to be overwhelming or stressful.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "I love how easy these units are to teach. The attention to detail and teaching the skills are fabulous. Such a fun and new way to approach writing."

-- WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THIS UNIT? ---

Narrative Writing Posters

Both 8.5x11 printable PDF posters and enlarged 16x20 JPG formats are included.

  • These are great charts to show students the difference between letters, words and sentences as well as reminders on how to write a complete sentence.

All About Me Books

Students make a mini book and practice using word banks to complete the sentence "I like..."

  • Each page has a sentence starter and four pictures/words students can choose from to complete their sentence.
  • Next, students can write their complete sentence on their own.
  • This is an excellent way to build student confidence and begin your narrative writing unit.

Sequencing Practice

7 themes are included in both color and black and white.

  • This activity introduces how to write about an event with more than one sentence.
  • When telling about an event, students practice using the sequencing words: first, next, then, last, etc.
  • Picture support and sentence starters make this process straight forward and easy for students to complete.

Sentence Starters

These graphic organizers provide students with the perfect opportunity to sequence their ideas and add details.

  • Now that students know how to sequence events, these activities give students a sentence starter, and students fill in their own details using the graphic organizer.

Narrative Writing - Quick + Easy on 1 Page

10 prompts/activity pages provide everything your students need to write their first narrative piece!

  • Where did you go? What did you do? How did you feel?
  • Students look at the picture boxes and write sentences on the coordinating writing lines.
  • Differentiated versions for students: sentence starters and write on your own.

Word Banks with Recording Sheets

Colorful posters provide students with an opportunity to now choose what they want to write about:

Where did you go? What did you do? How did you feel?

  • We use these prompts multiple times so students can come up with multiple combinations of what to write about.
  • Students enjoy the consistency and routine of using these activities. These printables are perfect for small groups, whole group lessons and even literacy centers.

We continue our personal narratives using the same format, but with different prompts/posters:

If I were a _____ I would _____ It is ______

  • Picture word bank posters prompt students to choose a profession (firefighter, doctor, pilot, etc.)
  • Students fill in their coordinating graphic organizer, and then turn this into complete sentences to write a narrative piece.

Snapshot Moments

These 5 personal narrative prompts are so much fun students to capture and elaborate on a snapshot moment in their lives.

  • Students brainstorm ideas using the graphic organizer.
  • Next, they can write a narrative piece on the coordinating writing paper.
  • I provide picture word banks and sentence starters for scaffolding, and this makes the entire writing process seamless and easy for both teachers and students.

  • Bonus update: due to so many requests, a blank snapshot moment kit is now included! Now students can write about any event they wish using the graphic organizer and writing papers they have become familiar with.

Personal Narrative Writing Journals

10 different themes are included, and the possibilities are endless for what students can write!

Themes include:

  • We got a new puppy!
  • We had a car wash!
  • Our day at the lake.
  • We played at the park.

Each theme comes with multiple activities for students to write a complete personal narrative piece.

Extra Pages

Blank graphic organizers and writing pages are included to use as needed.
