Description

Updated February 2024---Now includes answer keys!

These lessons can be assigned asynchronously or done as a class with direct instruction support.  They are created to support students in practicing the skills they will need to do well on a state test that is NGSS aligned.  Students will review concepts and will apply their knowledge in a format similar to the cast.  Each lesson includes interactive elements like PhET simulations and videos and also includes reading passages and diagrams.  Every lesson ends with a performance task that will help students practice applying their knowledge in a longer paragraph form.

There are four lessons included in this test review:

  • Earth Science
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Biology

The lessons would be an easier independent review for most 12th graders, but still good practice for the test.  I think 8th graders would benefit from the lessons as well but some might need direct instruction support.

NGSSHS-ESS2-4
Use a model to describe how variations in the flow of energy into and out of Earth's systems result in changes in climate. Examples of the causes of climate change differ by timescale, over 1-10 years: large volcanic eruption, ocean circulation; 10-100s of years: changes in human activity, ocean circulation, solar output; 10-100s of thousands of years: changes to Earth's orbit and the orientation of its axis; and 10-100s of millions of years: long-term changes in atmospheric composition. Assessment of the results of changes in climate is limited to changes in surface temperatures, precipitation patterns, glacial ice volumes, sea levels, and biosphere distribution.
NGSSHS-LS3-1
Ask questions to clarify relationships about the role of DNA and chromosomes in coding the instructions for characteristic traits passed from parents to offspring. Assessment does not include the phases of meiosis or the biochemical mechanism of specific steps in the process.
NGSSMS-PS3-1
Construct and interpret graphical displays of data to describe the relationships of kinetic energy to the mass of an object and to the speed of an object. Emphasis is on descriptive relationships between kinetic energy and mass separately from kinetic energy and speed. Examples could include riding a bicycle at different speeds, rolling different sizes of rocks downhill, and getting hit by a wiffle ball versus a tennis ball.
NGSSMS-PS2-5
Conduct an investigation and evaluate the experimental design to provide evidence that fields exist between objects exerting forces on each other even though the objects are not in contact. Examples of this phenomenon could include the interactions of magnets, electrically-charged strips of tape, and electrically-charged pith balls. Examples of investigations could include first-hand experiences or simulations. Assessment is limited to electric and magnetic fields, and limited to qualitative evidence for the existence of fields.
