Description

Students observe patterns to plan and conduct an investigation to classify fabric samples in these activities and assessment aligned to the *Next Generation Science Standards.

These activities begin with a whole class review of the properties of matter using fabric scraps.

This is followed with a study of one fabric " My Fabric" and discussion of the sources of fabrics.

Next, an individual assessment is provided in which students investigate the properties of fabrics and classify fabric samples into groups based on the properties that can be seen and felt.

The assessment culminates in the use of patterns to create an art collage with the fabrics. Then the making of a real world concrete graph of the collages with the writing of an opinion piece concludes the study.

The three dimensions assessed are (1) the scientific and engineering practice of planning and carrying out investigations; (2) the disciplinary core idea of the structure and properties of matter; and (3) the crosscutting concept of patterns.

Included: Teacher background, Teaching Procedure, materials lists, recording sheets, rubrics for scoring.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph.
Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section.
Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., read a number of books on a single topic to produce a report; record science observations).
Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
NGSS2-PS1-1
Plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties. Observations could include color, texture, hardness, and flexibility. Patterns could include the similar properties that different materials share.
