Before 1860, Americans needed workers to do the hard work, slave traders saw an opportunity to earn a lot of money by buying and selling African blacks. From the beginning, these slaves tried to escape the owners but it was dangerous and could lead to death.

The underground railroad is the name of the secret road used by these slaves to escape to freedom. Of course, it was not a real railroad, but rather a series of safe havens.

It was forbidden to teach slaves to read and write, so they could not communicate with each other. But since they have a knowledge of weaving materials, they discovered that they were able to communicate messages in the stitches, patterns, designs, colors and fabrics of quilts.

The models of freedom quilts told slaves how to prepare to escape, what to do during the travel and where to go. Once sewn, the coded quilts were placed on the porches of the slave shacks, acting as secret maps for the slaves.
