Description

Improve rhythmic success & confidence! Flip the traditional teaching process with this hands-on rhythmic DICTATION game. This music rhythm activity is perfect for students to practice ta/tadi/rest (ta/titi/rest) in a variety of fun ways! Empower your musicians by developing rhythm dictation in an intentional way that leads to understanding!

Rhythms included

•Set 1 – ta, rest (stick notation)

•Set 2 – ta, ta-di/ti-ti (stick notation)

•Set 3 – ta, ta-di/ti-ti, rest (stick notation)

•Set 4 – ta, ta-di/ti-ti, rest in 2/4 time – 8 beat chunks (traditional notation)

•Set 4 flashcards again with beat hearts over the beats.

Each set includes 8 flashcards (2 to a page) & all 8 on a final side.

Black/whiter version of the “8 to a page” slides are at the end.

These Powerpoint slides can be opened in Google Slides as well.

Tips for 2 Rhythms to a Slide (Reading Practice)

•Perfect for flashcards! Just print and cut in half.

•Clap, play on rhythm instruments

•Make up body percussion for each rhythm (ex. – ta =stomp, ta-di – clap, rest pat thighs)

•Have half the students count the top card at the same time as half are counting bottom cards. This makes instant rhythm duets!

•Have half the students play top rhythm on rhythm sticks while the other half play an ostinato on barred instrument.

Tips for 8 Rhythms to a Slide (Aural dictation)

•Play the ‘envelope’ game (also called “post office” game (article here)

•Show slide to class (or give each child) a copy of the page. Count a rhythm. Students identify which rhythm it is (1-8). Students hold up the card (or the # of fingers of the card) they think is correct. Then teacher identifies the correct answer and all count the rhythm together

Tip – Print each resource on different color paper to help with organization.

Centers

  • Flashcards - students take turns selecting cards to hold up for each other - the rest of the group counts or plays on rhythm or barred instruments
  • 8 to a card page (cut into 8 pieces) - students mix up the order of 4-8 cards and count or play. Students can also create duets by having half the group count or play 4 cards and the other half of the group count or play the other 4 cards at the same time.
