What educators are saying

My students loved using this resource! It was easy to prepare and kept us engaged for the whole lesson!
My students love these mysteries! They usually start them in class and while some may finish, most of them like to take them home and complete on their own time. It's also been a good activity to do after state testing. LOVE!

Math Skills Required to Unlock Clues

Students must use their multiplication skills to eliminate monster suspects to solve who needs to be arrested for the scare crimes in Mathhattan!

There are five clues to crack to solve the mystery:

  • Clue 1 Worksheet: Mixed Multiplication Facts (1-12)
  • Clue 2 Worksheet: More Mixed Multiplication Facts (1-12)
  • Clue 3 Worksheet: Missing Factors
  • Clue 4 Worksheet: Multiplication Word Problems (1-12)
  • Clue 5 Worksheet: Multiplication Input/output Tables (apply the multiplication rule given to the numbers in the table)

>> Pack includes a mystery declaration sheet, answer sheets, an elimination guide, an editable suspect list, and printable awards.

How long will this activity take?

The time to complete will vary anywhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours! It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format and how difficult they find math skills covered in the particular mystery. Please check the math skills outlined in the clues above to help determine suitability for your class. I recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, move on to the next clue within the same lesson or the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, "We must learn something new before attempting the next clue." There are lots of ways to implement this activity in your classroom; learn more in the blog post link below:

Standards

Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation relating three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 × ? = 48, 5 = __ ÷ 3, 6 × 6 = ?.
Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 × 5 = 40, one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.
