What educators are saying

My students enjoyed this - we haven't used all the slides yet. It helped students who were unsure how to move to have a suggestion to get them moving!
I love how creative the movements are in these posters and how many options there are. My students had a lot of fun with them.

Description

I've used different types of visual prompts for moving over the years, all of them great fun. But as I began to realize that, in order to reflect and include all students in my classes, I would have to create my own picture cards. My commitment was to create cards that serve as mirrors and windows for students: I hope that is evident in the cards (though I know I have room to improve and add to them.)

These are totally made up- there is no big research behind them or official philosophy of movement. I just wanted colorful, fun cards that had ALL kinds of different ways of moving, from the “pedagogically sound” standards (e.g. “Gallop” and "March") to the silly and sometimes bizarre, but fun (e.g. “Game” or “Middle School Dance Moves”). I want my kids to grow in their creative capacity, and movement is a fantastic, fun way to help them do that. These cards appeal to them, engage them, and push them to think outside the box.

There are a few different applications for some or all of these cards and I know you can come up with some that I never would have thought of! In my classroom, the primary use is for group movement exploration- often as simple as putting on music as the kids walk, march, or dance to the beat and then at random points during the music, projecting one of the cards on the Activeboard for kids to stop and approximate. Or during Keeping the Beat activities, I will play a piece of music and ask kids to tap the beat on a part of their body until I project one of the cards, whereupon they have to move in the way the card prompts them. Sometimes I switch things up and say "Do the opposite of what the card shows you!" which gets lots of interesting responses from kids!

Some of the cards will be easy for kids to get right away, others will need some explanation/discussion ahead of time- just keep that in mind.

I hope these will inspire you to have more fun with movement in your classroom, and that you will even create your own movement cards!

You can find the Add-On pack of 75 more movements here, or in the bundle!
