Description

 The primary goal of this assignment is to guide students through a nuanced exploration of whatever text you choose. By delving into mood, tone, character development, visual representation, and symbolism, students will not only deepen their understanding of the work but also refine essential ELA skills.


Objective: 

Engage students in a comprehensive analysis of a text by focusing on mood, tone, character development, visual representation, and symbolism.

Materials Needed:

  • Copies of choice texts for each student
  • Annotation tools (highlighters, sticky notes, etc.)
  • Art supplies for creating visuals (markers, colored pencils, etc.)
  • Copies of Storyboard assignment


Standards connection: 

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for 11th Grade ELA:

  • Reading Literature (RL.11-12):
    • Objective: Analyze and interpret literature, focusing on mood, tone, and symbolism.
    • Connection: Students will engage in close reading, annotation, and analysis of a text addressing RL.11-12.1 (Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly) and RL.11-12.2 (Determine two or more themes or central ideas of a text).
  • Writing (W.11-12):
    • Objective: Express ideas clearly and coherently, demonstrating understanding of literary elements.
    • Connection: Students will articulate their analyses in writing, addressing W.11-12.2 (Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information).
  • Language (L.11-12):
    • Objective: Use language effectively for various purposes.
    • Connection: Students will employ precise language in their written and spoken analyses, addressing L.11-12.3 (Apply knowledge of language to understand how language functions in different contexts, to make effective choices for meaning or style, and to comprehend more fully when reading or listening).

National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Standards for 11th Grade:

  • Reading for Understanding:
    • Objective: Develop strategies for comprehending and analyzing complex texts.
    • Connection: Students will analyze the selected poem for mood, tone, and symbolism, aligning with NCTE Standard 1 (Students read a wide range of print and nonprint texts).
  • Writing and Composition:
    • Objective: Express ideas clearly in writing.
    • Connection: Students will write informative/explanatory texts to convey complex literary analyses, aligning with NCTE Standard 4 (Students adjust their use of spoken, written, and visual language).
  • Critical Analysis and Interpretation:
    • Objective: Interpret and analyze literary elements, such as mood, tone, and symbolism.
    • Connection: Students will engage in critical analysis, addressing NCTE Standard 6 (Students apply knowledge of language structure, language conventions, media techniques, figurative language, and genre to create, critique, and discuss print and non-print texts).

By addressing these standards, the project encourages students to deepen their understanding of literature, refine their analytical skills, and express their interpretations effectively.
