What educators are saying

The kids really loved this and it helped them understand the content in a more meaningful way! Thank you!

Description

I created these monthly reader’s response prompts in response to student feedback that I got about my homework policy last year. Like many teachers, I was using a weekly reader’s response letter as a way to see what my students were thinking about their books. However, these soon became tedious for me to grade, and tedious for students to write.

Having students complete monthly reader’s responses has several advantages:
• More variety for the student, since each response will be about a different book and focus on a different way of thinking about the text
• Less grading for the teacher, which makes it easier to give meaningful feedback on each student’s response
• Increased flexibility for students, since they can choose to turn in their response before the deadline (increasing their responsibility)

Each of my monthly response prompts includes three components: a space for students to record book information and rate the book; a space for a short, 3-5 sentence summary of the book; and a space for them to respond to a targeted thinking prompt about their book.
