Description
This is a hands-on lesson that models crossing-over, independent assortment, and fertilization in an easy-to-understand manner. By the end of this activity, students were able to explain each concept and how they create genetic variation in populations.
I have uploaded this in both a PDF and .pptx format, so you can modify and differentiate for your classroom and students' needs. ANSWER KEY INCLUDED. Enjoy!
**This is NGSS aligned and does NOT include memorizing the specific phases of meiosis.**
NOTE: For this lesson, you need pop-beads. However, it can easily be edited to use other meiosis cut-outs.

NGSSHS-LS3-2
Make and defend a claim based on evidence that inheritable genetic variations may result from (1) new genetic combinations through meiosis, (2) viable errors occurring during replication, and/or (3) mutations caused by environmental factors. Emphasis is on using data to support arguments for the way variation occurs. Assessment does not include the phases of meiosis or the biochemical mechanism of specific steps in the process.
