Description
The "Mega Genetics / DNA / Chromosomes Bundle" starts your students going over DNA and RNA with powerpoints and differentiated guided notes. You have a set of "DNA Processes" Word Wall Coloring sheets to help students become familiar with the vocabulary words for the "DNA Processes" lesson. The "DNA Processes" lesson is where students will learn about DNA replication, DNA transcription and translation. Students will practice the processes with the review questions in the differentiated guided notes. You can assess their skill acquisition with the Alien Arthropod Activity where the students will be given an "alien" DNA strand to decode and draw an alien arthropod.
The lesson on "Genetic Disorders: Mistakes in the DNA Code" explains the four main causes of genetic mutations; deletion, insertion, inversion and duplication. Single DNA strand mutations and chromosomal mutations are presented and coupled with diseases that are caused as a result. Sickle cell anemia, PKU, Huntington's, Down's Syndrome and others are introduced to the students. Students will also learn how to read karyotypes and pedigrees. The end of the PowerPoint presentation presents eight human genetic mutations which have beneficial effects. The Single DNA strand mutation activity and karyotype activity are included as a great follow-up to "Genetic Disorders: Mistakes in the DNA Code" to assess the student's understanding of the material.
A second set of word wall coloring sheets is included which reviews students over important vocabulary terms for Mendelian and non-Mendelian Genetic problems. The PowerPoint presentation and guided notes covers complete dominance, incomplete dominance, codominance, blood typing, sex linked inheritance, dihybrid and epistasis.
There is a "Genetic Expression" activity included where students will determine if the expressed traits are due to biological inherited factors or environmental factors.
The final lesson is over genetic engineering. Topics covered in the "Genetic Engineering" PowerPoint and differentiated guided notes includes:
· Recombinant DNA technology
· Forms of Cloning
· Polymerase chain reaction
· Animal cloning
· Plant cloning
· Stem cells
· Growing Organs
· DNA fingerprinting
· Electrophoresis
· Karyotype
· Chromosome Painting
There are real examples of glowing animals and plants, selective breeding, the regeneration of organs and diabetes treatment. The benefits and consequences of cloning and genetically modified plants and animals is presented along with historical events.
Naturally you can cover the lessons in any order you wish. I included a free bonus files over meiosis. Its a great unit to cover before going into Mendelian genetics.
