What educators are saying

I love this activity! It provides great ideas for what happened to the Maya people. The kids really enjoy diving deeper with this and I got great discussion and writing as well. This is great for higher level readers, especially!
This is a great resource to have in your tool kit for social studies/history. I absolutely love the resources produced by History with Mr. E. Every time I've used them they do not disappoint!!!

Description

In this Maya Empire CSI Investigation, students take on the role of historians, scientists, and researchers as they try to uncover the reasons behind the downfall of the Mayan Empire. Students research the Maya downfall in Mesoamerica to understand their history, culture, and the factors that may have led to their demise.

This resource is included in my Mesoamerica Unit Bundle to teach the Inca, Maya, and Aztec as well as my CSI World History Bundle!

Students are engaged with a short video to start the investigation, then read through their confidential case files where they analyze four separate theories on the Mayan downfall. Then, students complete a picture progression where they assume that all four theories played a role in their decline.

Finally, students are hired on by the CDC (Center for Disease Control) and are asked to explain what they believe was the reason behind the collapse of this once-great world empire. Students must offer up an explanation that takes all four theories into consideration! Too, students must offer "tips" for a future civilization to ensure their survival!

Tons of fun!

A key is included, plus a fully compatible Google 1:1 version that allows students to type directly into the document!

* An alternate version is also included in case you would like to give students a packet of questions to navigate between stations! *
