May Close Reading Comprehension Passages | 3rd Grade & 4th Grade

A book with ten close reading passages focused on key events in May or famous figures that were either born or died in the month. Each activity has an informational text with comprehension and grammar questions followed by an extension task, followed by a crossword puzzle and wordsearch activity. The NO PREP reading comprehension activities are perfect for students in third grade or fourth grade. Students will learn about world history whilst developing their comprehension skills.

The book includes individual activities on:

• The famous English soccer player, David Beckham, who was born on the 2nd May 1975.
• The French leader, Napoleon Bonaparte, who died on the 5th May 1821 on the remote island of St. Helena.
• The 33rd president of the United States, Harry Truman, who was born on the 8th May 1884.
• VE Day, where Germany surrendered to Allied forces on the 8th May 1945, which brought an end of World War II in Europe.
• The famous Spanish Surrealist artist, Salvador Dali, who was born on the 11th May 1904.
• The founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale, who was born on the 12th May 1820.
• The guide and translator, Sacagawea, who joined Lewis and Clark as they set off on their expedition across America on the 14th May 1804.
• Mount Everest, which was climbed for the first time on the 29th May 1953.
• The famous Swedish activist, Greta Thunberg, who received an Honorary Doctor of Law from the University of British Colombia on the 31st May 2021.
• The nemesis of the Roman Empire, Hannibal, who famously crossed the Alps with his army which included elephants in May 218 BC.

Time allowance for each activity:

5 minutes - read through the text individually.

40 minutes - answer questions using the text as guidance (including extension activity)

15 minutes - Teacher and students go through the text and answers.
