I used this at our school's multicultural night. The students all loved coloring and being able to make their own dolls from grades pk-5. Great resource as an activity for various ages as you can combine art and history at their individual level and everyone learned more about Russia.

Description

This lesson is about the history of Matryoshka or Russian Nesting Dolls. This lesson encourages conversations about the history of Russia and allows the students will create a beautiful drawing to reinforce the learning experience. The lesson is perfect for K through 5th grade with some variations. Students will have the opportunity to explore line drawing, cutting skills and working with color and pattern. The lesson will invite the child to create a beautiful unique art piece based on the theme.

The Matryoshka Doll in Russian Culture. To non-Russians, the matryoshka, or nesting doll, is one of the most quintessential representations of traditional Russian peasant life.

You can use this lesson in the following ways:

  • a unit on Russia
  • a 30-45 minute sub plan
  • a introduction to the many ways artists create using basic line drawing techniques
  • a simple design that helps to build a student’s confidence in drawing
  • a basic history lesson
