Description

Excited to try doodle notes but need a product that will fit inside your interactive notebooks? Then Doodle Note Brochures are perfect for you!

Research shows that students who sketch, color, or doodle while listening to instruction tend to have better recall. These Doodle Note Brochures combine coloring, note taking, examples, and creative visual triggers to help students remember mathematical concepts.

Understanding the major mathematical properties of addition and multiplication is an essential prerequisite skill to solving complex algebraic equations. This Doodle Note Brochure provides students with verbal and visual cues to help remember the meanings of each property. From how you move to school (commute) and who you associate with (in parentheses of course!) these word based associations are great for helping struggling students.

Also included is the output practice page (2 to a page) which includes an opportunity to identify properties and make an equivalent expression.

I simply have my students pick up their page on their way into class. After bell work they can fold and begin coloring the front of their brochure. My only requirements are that students must listen, they must take all applicable notes, and they must stop coloring/doodling when I am finished teaching. They are welcome to finish coloring and decorating after their classwork is complete or at home/in their free time.

I typically give students a few extra problems to complete that they work out on the right side of their notebooks.

Project the template onto your board, screen using a projector or Elmo, or use powerpoint or your Smart Board software. I cut and paste into ActivInspire and write directly on my smartboard.

Apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. For example, apply the distributive property to the expression 3 (2 + 𝘹) to produce the equivalent expression 6 + 3𝘹; apply the distributive property to the expression 24𝘹 + 18𝘺 to produce the equivalent expression 6 (4𝘹 + 3𝘺); apply properties of operations to 𝘺 + 𝘺 + 𝘺 to produce the equivalent expression 3𝘺.
Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients.
