Description

Connect Math and Literacy with this Read Aloud Activity Guide. Enjoy the book A Very Improbable Story by Edward Einhorn together as a class as you explore mathematical concepts of multi-digit multiplication, negative numbers, prime numbers, and time. Similar to a Movie Guide, this Read Aloud Activity Guide is great for cross-curricular connections and transitions between math and literacy blocks.

Included in this resource:

  • Teacher instruction pages with how best to use each resource and additional materials needed for use
  • Black and White Activity Page (PDF)
    • With questions on probability skills like fraction probabilities, number of outcomes, tree diagrams, predictions, and real world context.
    • Questions are linked to certain pages in the text

  • Teacher Answer Key (PDF)
  • Let's Learn More Page (PDF) with more probability examples and real-world connections

How to use this resource:

  • Use this Read Aloud Activity Guide to connect story time with math practice and real-life applications. Cross-curricular learning for the win!
  • Use during transitions between literacy and math learning blocks, or send home in book bags for students to share in the activity with their families.

Reporting the number of observations.
Understand that the probability of a chance event is a number between 0 and 1 that expresses the likelihood of the event occurring. Larger numbers indicate greater likelihood. A probability near 0 indicates an unlikely event, a probability around 1/2 indicates an event that is neither unlikely nor likely, and a probability near 1 indicates a likely event.
Approximate the probability of a chance event by collecting data on the chance process that produces it and observing its long-run relative frequency, and predict the approximate relative frequency given the probability. For example, when rolling a number cube 600 times, predict that a 3 or 6 would be rolled roughly 200 times, but probably not exactly 200 times.
Find probabilities of compound events using organized lists, tables, tree diagrams, and simulation.
Make connections between the text of a story or drama and a visual or oral presentation of the text, identifying where each version reflects specific descriptions and directions in the text.
